Minnesota is home to many major highways and scenic roads, but few compare to Highway 61. This road travels north for 165 miles before coming to a stop and even changing names. Along this road you’ll find a plethora of charming towns, beautiful scenery, historic landmarks and even plenty of shopping. Jump in your car and enjoy the ride!
Highway 61 in Minnesota is an original U.S. Route, established in 1926.
The road is dotted with charming small towns. One of the most popular - and most beautiful - is Red wing. It's home to lovely historic buildings and an abundance of activities.
Another popular spot along Highway 61 is the beautiful town of Hastings. Shop the historic downtown area, explore the parks and extensive trail systems and experience all the beauty and small town charm Hastings has to offer.
If you get hungry along the way, there are plenty of great restaurants along Highway 61. stop in for a bite at Blacksmith Lounge on Highway 61 in Hugo. They have the best broasted chicken in the area!
As for natural beauty, there's plenty right outside your windows. But if you'd like to stop and explore, Frontenac State Park is one of the best spots near Highway 61. It has 13 miles of hiking trails with incredible bluff views.
In the summertime, Phalen Regional Park in St. Paul is a nice stop. Hiking trails will take you through lovely landscapes, and a swimming beach will help you cool off.
