As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Sometimes, what we really need is to get away from it all. Here in Minnesota, with over 50 state parks, a national park accessible only by boat, and the million-acre Boundary Waters, we have plenty of opportunities to do that. But what if we want to get really, really far away from it all? Your best bet may be Prothero’s Post, a hidden resort way up in Minnesota’s Northwest Angle.
This half-century-old resort has been around since before there was a road. There's a road now, but being in the Northwest Angle, Prothero's Post Resort can only be accessed by crossing through Canada.
Prothero's Post Resort lies on Lake of the Woods, the sixth-largest freshwater lake in the United States. The only ones bigger are the five Great Lakes.
Either way, boating is the only way to experience this enormous lake. Enjoy the serenity of nature while creating your own fish tale. Lake of the Woods is home to northern, walleye, crappie, sturgeon, and more.
And when you're all done enjoying the lake, Prothero's Post Resort has six cozy cabins and a lodge for guests to enjoy. There's also a gift and snack shop, plus a fire pit for roasting up marshmallows after a long day on the lake.
Each building is outfitted with rustic furnishings that will give you a true up-north feel. But if after a few nights you're itching for technology, Prothero's does have free Wi-Fi.
Much of the resort's business comes from families and groups that have been visiting for decades. That should tell you how beautiful and serene this place is - people keep coming back. If you're looking for a hidden place to unwind and relax, this is it.
Have you been to the Northwest Angle or Lake of the Woods? Prothero’s Post Resort is located at 17696 Prothero Drive NW in Angle Inlet, Minnesota. Let us know if you go!
