Many states shut down once cold weather hits. But not Minnesota. People in the Land of 10,000 Lakes area accustomed to making the most of their time, whether it’s through rain, snow, or heat. And when you think about all that Minnesota has to offer, it’s no wonder. The state is full of places that are beautiful no matter the season. One of our favorites is the hidden falls at Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park. Whether you visit in spring, summer, fall, or winter, this waterfall is something special. Take a look:
Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park is a beautiful stretch of southern Minnesota. It covers more than 2,800 acres, mostly woods surrounding the quiet Prairie Creek.
The woods are made up of many trees, including the oak hardwood forest that has been there since the Ice Age. The woods are full of wildlife, from deer to foxes to birds, so step quietly and you might catch a glimpse!
The small but beautiful trickle of Prairie Creek as it tumbles over limestone is simply beautiful. The moss-covered rocks only add to the hidden feel of this little waterfall.
Summer isn't the only time Hidden Falls is worth seeing. When it gets cold enough, Prairie Creek freezes. Visit at the right time, you'll be treated to the rare sight of a frozen waterfall.
The snow and ice seem to silent the noise of the woods, and the bare trees add to the peaceful, calming effect. If you have a chance, definitely visit this waterfall in winter.
Spring brings new life to the waterfall. In early spring, the falls - unfrozen at last - are an interesting sight. As the trees begin to green up again, birds will begin chirping. The renewed waterfall is the perfect symbol of spring!
But what about fall? It might just be the most beautiful time at Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park. The trees blaze with orange, yellow, and red, making this a gorgeous place to visit.
The slow journey of Prairie Creek, surrounded by the changing leaves, is perfectly picturesque. Walk along its banks to see sights rarely seen by most Minnesotans.
And when you reach the waterfall, you'll be treated with the sight of a flowing waterfall, golden leaves, and perfect peace. Hidden Falls at Nerstrand-Big Woods is beautiful year-round!
