It’s not every day that you feel the desire to visit a gas station, but in Cloquet there’s a unique piece of history that’s hiding in plain sight that you’ll want to see. With the hopes of one day designing his own city, a small piece of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural master plan came to be with the creation of long-loved roadside attraction. If you’ve yet to explore this spot for yourself, let’s explain why exactly it is such a special place.
Roughly a half-hour west of Duluth, the city of Cloquet is home to a historic gas station.
Frank Lloyd Wright originally designed the gas station in 1927. It was intended for Buffalo, New York, but 30 years later, he found the opportunity to bring it to life.
After already designing a house for R. W. Lindholm in Cloquet, Wright used his power of persuasion to convince the man to build the gas station in town.
Opening up not long before Wright's death in 1959, the gas station has many details that any lover of architecture will be able to appreciate, like its futuristic observation deck.
