Most people who’ve spent time in Minnesota realize that our state is pretty outdoorsy. There’s so much to do outside, from hiking and swimming to fishing and camping, that you could easily spend every day of the year doing a new activity or visiting a beautiful new place. But all of our nature-oriented activities don’t mean that Minnesota is bereft of cultural activities. In fact, it’s just the opposite. There are many destinations in Minnesota where nature and art combine to create unforgettable attractions. One of our favorites is a quirky sculpture park not far from the Twin Cities that is sure to delight people of all ages. Take a look:
Franconia Sculpture Park is an outdoor sculpture park in Schafer, Minnesota. It's not far outside of the Twin Cities, about 50 miles northeast of Minneapolis between Forest Lake and Taylors Falls on U.S. Highway 8.
The park covers 20 acres and contains dozens of innovative and unique sculptures. They were created by many different artists and collectively serve as a way for visitors to learn about art and the environment.
Each sculpture is unique, made of interesting materials that come together in original, thought-provoking ways. As you walk along the paths - some gravel, some grass - you'll constantly be met with new, interesting works.
The park is open 365 days per year, regardless of rain, sunshine, or snow. Hours vary depending on the season. We recommend visiting at any time of year. Depending on when you go, the park has a different feel.
Kids especially enjoy the colorful playground. Unlike anything else in Minnesota, it looks like a ramshackle castle built out of spare parts. But it's a solid, safe playground that kids will love exploring!
If you're looking for an outdoor activity where you also get to enjoy art, Franconia Sculpture Park is an excellent choice. This whimsical, quirky park is full of interesting works!
Have you ever been to Franconia Sculpture Park? For more information about the park, visit its website and Facebook page. And if you’d like to recommend other quirky Minnesota places to us, be sure to nominate them.
