Minnesota has enough state parks to keep you busy every week of the year – and then some. Sure, the most popular parks – Gooseberry Fall and Fort Snelling, to name a few – are both beautiful and historic. But there are plenty of lesser known parks that are just as deserving of a visit. One such park is an often overlooked spot southwest of the Twin Cities in Fairfax, Minnesota. This place combines history and natural beauty into one fascinating package. Next time you’re looking for something to do that’s a little off the beaten path, head to Fort Ridgely State Park.
Fort Ridgely State Park is a 220-acre stretch in the small town of Fairfax, Minnesota, about 100 miles southwest of Minneapolis. Address: 72158 County Road 30, Fairfax, MN 55332.
Plenty of old trees, wildflowers, and prairie grasses are on display at this little park. It's especially beautiful in summer and fall, when the trees still have their leaves.
There's plenty to do in this nature area. For example, fish the stocked trout stream or pond, go horseback riding, or explore the 8 miles of hiking trails.
If you're a golf lover, there is even a 9-hole course for you to enjoy. This park combines the beauty of nature with your favorite hobby - and a touch of Minnesota history!
As you explore the park, you'll undoubtedly come across the historic structures that still stand on this land. Fort Ridgely is Minnesota's fourth-oldest state park, and these structures are proof.
The largest structure is a former fort built during the 19th century. It played a part in the U.S.-Dakota war of 1862. The building now houses a museum.
Other interesting structures include the ruins of an old fort, as well as a cemetery. Informational signs will guide you through this often forgotten history of Minnesota.
All in all, Fort Ridgely State Park is an interesting place to spend a day - or even a weekend. Campsites and even a cabin are available for overnight stays.
