The Fifth Falls and Superior Hiking Trail Loop is an easy and quick 3-mile loop that takes you through forests, around bridges, over rivers, and to views of a magnificent waterfall. This trail can be found outside Silver Creek Township in Minnesota, inside Gooseberry Falls State Park. While the best time of year to use the trail for hiking depends on the weather, March through October are typically the best months of the year for the Fifth Falls hike. However, during mellow winters, this hike is a great option year-round and should be near the top of your list.
The most magnificent view of the hike is where the famous and winding Gooseberry River turns into a waterfall, (Fifth Falls) just after the bridge crossing.
Above the waterfall, the views are much different. The Gooseberry River slowly flows by and is a lovely place to relax near the water or on the bridge if you want to view the water from a different vantage point.
Here, the seasons bring the changing leaves, which also bring changing views. The bright yellows, oranges, and reds that can be found on the birch trees here are magnificent and make for a memorable experience you will want to share with your friends.
The most popular waterfall on the Gooseberry River is Gooseberry Falls, but these Fifth Falls typically have less of a crowd and are a better way to enjoy all that nature has to offer.
Dogs are also welcome here. They will love running on the beach along the shoreline while you enjoy a nice break and take in the view with a snack. If you are feeling extra adventurous, why not pack a picnic lunch?
This trail can be out and back or can be turned into a loop. If you want to take a different route back to see even more views, keep going when the trail comes to the bridge and follow the Superior Hiking Trail to the Upper Falls on the opposite side of the river.
The Fifth Falls is one of our favorite hikes in Gooseberry Falls State Park. If you are looking for some incredible views, lace up your hiking boots, pack a snack, and hit the trail! You won’t regret it! Be sure to let us know what your favorite view from the trail was in the comments.
