Many people have passed through Alexandria, Minnesota, on I-94 on their way to Fargo or Minneapolis. But far fewer have actually stopped to explore all that the town has to offer. Despite being relatively small – the population is around 11,000 – Alexandria has a lot going on. From nature activities to historic mystery, this enchanting town is unlike any other.
Alexandria, Minnesota, was first settled in 1858. It grew into a charming town with many amenities.
One of the most striking things is the busy downtown area. It is filled with cute shops and restaurants that will give you a taste of what this small town is all about.
When you're done exploring downtown, a visit to Carlos Creek Winery might be in order. Make a day of sampling the delicious wines in a beautiful setting.
But Alexandria's biggest claim to fame may be its scenic beauty. It is nestled among many northern Minnesota lakes. There are more than 350 in the area!
Hike along the Central Lakes Trail to see some of the town's most stunning beauty. Though the trail is 55 miles long, it only takes a mile or two to see the beauty.
The nearby Lake Carlos State Park offers views of marshes, bogs, and lakes. Its 14 miles of hiking trails and many campsites offer plenty of opportunity to see the sights.
