There are dozens of spectacular fall hikes in Minnesota! Whether you want to explore a rushing waterfall, a little-known forest, or a serene lake, there are countless beautiful places that are full of fall color. One of the most unique fall hikes in the state might just be the trail we’d like to tell you about today. Next time you’re looking for a fall adventure on the North Shore, try paying a visit to Ely’s Peak. It’s absolutely gorgeous in the fall, and it comes complete with an abandoned train tunnel that you can explore. Take a look:
Ely's Peak is a low-lying hill near Duluth, Minnesota. It rises 1,133 feet above sea level at its highest point, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
The trail is not paved, so be sure to wear appropriate shoes if you visit. But if you are prepared, you're in for a real treat. The trail goes through a beautiful forest rutted with rugged rocks.
At some points, the path gets steep. But keep following it! When you reach the top, you'll be greeted with a spectacular view of the North Shore gorgeous scenery. It is even better in the fall, when the trees turn shades of orange, red, and yellow.
The peak is also the site of an abandoned train tunnel! The tunnel dates back to 1910, when the Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway broke ground. Tracks were laid a year later, and the tunnel was used for many decades.
The tunnel was abandoned by the railroad in 1995. The train tracks are all gone. But many hikers have left their mark inside, with interesting graffiti decorating the rugged walls. It is still possible to walk through the tunnel today. If you're heading towards the summit, we recommend a pitstop here!
Between the gorgeous surrounding landscape and unique abandoned tunnel hike, Ely's Peak is a fantastic hike for those who love exploring northern Minnesota's trail. This fall, definitely plan a visit while the leaves are at peak color!
