Minnesota isn’t exactly known for its rock formations. It’s no secret that our great state has many more bodies of water than mountain ranges or deep canyons. But there are still some impressive cliffs, gorges, and other rock formations throughout the state. In the past, we’ve covered the fascinating magnetic rock in northern Minnesota and the unique natural arch in the southeast. Today, we want to introduce yet another little-known Minnesota rock formation. Read on below to learn about Chimney Rock, a 30-foot-tall pillar in the Minnesota woods.
Chimney Rock Scientific and Natural Area is found in the eastern Minnesota town of Hastings. It's just a short drive for those who live in and around the Twin Cities, making it a great quick day trip destination.
Once you arrive, the Chimney Rock is a short hike through the woods. The trail is undeveloped, but it is easy to find your way by following the pillar that rises over the trees.
Chimney Rock is made of St. Peter Sandstone that has been in the area for more than 400 million years. The spire was formed by millions of years of weathering.
The rock rises 30 feet into the air and is the only spire of its kind in the surrounding area. Though made of rock, much of the pillar is soft and vulnerable to the elements.
If you're looking for a unique attraction hidden in a Minnesota forest, take a trip to Chimney Rock. The impressive pillar has been around for millions of years, and it's well worth visiting.
