The Amazing Border Route Trail Offers Views of Minnesota and Canada

Minnesota has endless trails for people of all ability levels. Some of the easiest trails will lead you to the most beautiful places. And the hardest will take you to spots that few Minnesotans ever get to see. We love both types of hikes, but today we are going to take you on a trip to one of the more challenging trails in Minnesota. This route through the northern part of the state will lead you through the Minnesota wilderness, eventually offering views of both Canada and Minnesota from above. Take a look:

The Border Route Trail is a 65-mile trail through northern Minnesota. It draws adventurous hikers eager to see Minnesota's true wilderness.

There is parking at the trailhead, as well as a box for visitors to pay for and collect a permit. Beyond this point, the trail is quite remote. Make sure you're prepared with everything you'll need for the duration of your stay.

If you're planning an overnight excursion - a must if you want to hike the entire trail - bring camping gear and a map of the existing campgrounds.

Speaking of thick trees, you'll be seeing plenty of those along your journey. The trail guides through the thick forests of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

In some sections, it climbs to heights that give hikers incredible views of the treetops from above.

Most elevated sections offer views of lakes and rivers. You'll see the water from a distance...

...and up close. The Border Route Trail passes many lakes. Most campsites on the trail are near a body of water.

There's even a waterfall or two, like the little-known Stairway Portage Falls.

These lakes are far from many major cities, as is the entire Border Route Trail. Many hikers never run into another person for their entire hike.

Nothing will remind you of how remote the area is like the view of Canada. The Border Route Trail is so far north that it offers views into Ontario!
