In Minnesota, nothing says home like cream of mushroom, ground beef, and tater tots. We’re talking of course, about hotdish. Some might scoff, but it truly does characterize our culture. This place first won our hearts with their amazing beer selection and burgers, but then we found their hotdish, and reached a whole new level of bliss. The meat is beer-braised brisket, which already takes the dish to a whole new level, but add in the caramelized brussel sprouts, roasted mushroom béchamel and truffled tots, and you're in comfort food heaven.

It won Viewers' Choice for WCCO this year, and the reason it's so beloved as a part of the lunch buffet is because the hotdish made by Happy Joe's is the closest you will ever come to your mother's recipe in a restaurant. It's the purest form of hotdish with only 4 ingredients, cheese, chicken, cream of mushroom, and tater tots.

Okay, so big disclaimer... hotdish is a special at Eli's and does not have a permanent spot on the menu. BUT, we can work together to change that, right?
Both Eli's locations had to be included in this because they have both served up this delicious meal, and because honestly, we can't pick a favorite. The tater tots alone at Eli's are unbelievable (and available everyday). So when they combine those with some cream of mushroom and our other favorite ingredients, we are full and happy. VERY full.
