In many ways, Vicksburg is a typical ghost town in Minnesota but a few things set it apart. For one thing, unlike most of Minnesota's ghost towns, it lies in the southern part of the state. You'll find it in the southern Minnesota county of Renville. The nearest populated settlement is the tiny town of Delhi, home to about 70 people as of the last census.

Though Vicksburg is long abandoned, it still holds an interesting history. The town was founded in 1867. It was named for the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the Civil War. By all accounts, early Vicksburg was a small but peaceful place to live. It even had a post office for most of its first 30 years, from 1871 to 1901.

During the 1800s, railroads began to cross Minnesota. Many towns were fortunate to be on their paths. But some, such as Vicksburg, were bypassed completely. Other towns on the railways thrived, but settlers slowly left the community, leaving Vicksburg as one of the abandoned places in Minnesota.

Vicksburg was completely abandoned by 1905. Little remains of this once peaceful settlement. In fact, the only real evidence of Vicksburg's existence? A tiny cemetery just north of town. We can only wonder what memories linger there. While peaceful and filled with history, some would find this to be one of the scariest places in Minnesota, thanks to its historic, abandoned state.
