If you’ve spent time in Minnesota, you’ve likely visited the North Shore a time or two. Most Minnesotans have, though most visits tend to be during the warmer months. After all, these are the best times to hike to the rushing waterfalls and tree-filled forests of northern Minnesota. But we’re here to tell you that you shouldn’t discount this area during the winter. After a good snowfall, peaceful quiet takes over the North Shore, transforming it into a magical winter paradise. You can see many of the best sights without leaving your car. All you have to do is follow the 145-mile section of Highway 61 between Duluth and Grand Portage. Sound good? Read on below to learn more about some of the places you’ll see.
Minnesota Highway 61 is a 148-mile road that follows the line of Minnesota's North Shore. It stretches from Duluth to the Canadian border, beyond Grand Portage. It was a part of the longer U.S. Highway 61, which went all the way to New Orleans, until 1991.
There are many sights to see along Highway 61. Many visitors come during the warm summer and colorful fall. But winter on the North Shore is just as magical. You can see for yourself if you follow Highway 61 from end to end.
As you drive, you'll often have a view of the lake through the trees. The usually choppy waters may be still and icy. If the ice is out, a fog often rolls off the water, creating a magical effect.
You'll also get to see some of the North Shore's most stunning landmarks, such as Split Rock Lighthouse. When the trees are bare, it's easier to see the lighthouse on its clifftop perch above the water. There's even a turnoff where you can get out and spend a few minutes enjoying the view.
You'll also pass many state parks. Being on the North Shore, these are some of the most beautiful places in Minnesota. They feature waterfalls, cliffs, lake views, and more. If you have time, be sure to stop and explore the quiet winter scenes found at them.
There are also some official state waysides along Highway 61. For example, Flood Bay State Wayside is a popular place to stop and see the waves crash ashore. It's just as beautiful in the winter, with the added bonus of being mostly free of other visitors!
Traveling further north doesn't mean there are fewer points of interest, either. The Wayswaugoing Bay Overlook is another great stop right off Highway 61. You'll get to look at the lake beyond the snow-covered trees!
All in all, a winter drive along Minnesota Highway 61 is a wonderful way to spend a day exploring the North Shore in peace and beauty. We highly recommend a snow-covered drive there this winter!
