The collection began in the 1960s when an MSU professor donated his collection of 6,000 comics.

When you’re given that many comics, it’s only natural to continue to grow the collection, and that’s exactly what Randall Scott, the library’s comic book bibliographer has done since he took the position in 1973.
Today, the collection has grown to over 200,000 items dating all the way back to the 1800s.

The majority of the comics are American, but every continent except Antarctica is represented in the collection.
