If you love to explore the great outdoors, Michigan is the perfect place to be. No matter what the weather is like outside, there’s always something new to discover – from stunning shorelines to waterfall wonders and everything in between. During the chilly months, you might think that hiking should take a backseat to indoor adventures, but we couldn’t disagree more. Check out the Manistee River Trail, one of the best winter hikes in Michigan!
The Manistee River Trail sits within the breathtaking Manistee National Forest and offers year-round recreational options for all ages. As its name implies, it features Manistee River frontage.
In conjunction with the North Country Trail, this pathway extends into a 23-mile loop that’s perfect for experienced hikers. The main Manistee River Trail, though, features approximately 8.8 miles.
This popular length of trail extends between Hopendyl Dam and the Upper River Trailhead. The trail’s difficulty is ranked as moderate, so you’ll want to wear appropriate footwear and exercise caution.
During your stroll, plan to spot everything from beautiful river views to dispersed camping areas that are ideal for a rustic overnight stay. During the winter months, the Manistee River Trail is especially magical.
When snow falls, the entire forested area seems to hold a sense of whimsy. Snow-topped trees, an icy waterfall, and peaceful vibes abound along the length of the trail as it follows the winding riverbank.
Leashed pets are also allowed on the trail, so bring along your four-legged friend for a bit of snowy fun. Just don’t forget to bundle up before heading out, even if you’re only planning on a leisurely daytime hike.
Stop to snap a few photos of the surrounding landscape, which looks almost fairytale-like amid the sparkling winter conditions. As you hike up and down rolling hills, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world.
Whether you explore a small out-and-back section of trail or extend your journey into a full loop, one thing is for sure: the Manistee River Trail and its surrounding attractions are worth visiting in each and every season.
