If you ask a Michigander for waterfall recommendations you will surely hear about Tahquamenon Falls and Munising Falls. While those waterfalls are majestic and popular for a reason, I prefer to visit hiking spots that aren’t as well-traveled. This waterfall trail in Ontonagon, Michigan is a little-known path that gives you incredible views and some mining history along the way.
Union Mine Trail is located in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the northwest corner of the Upper Peninsula. The Porcupine Mountains, otherwise known as the Porkies, are small mountains that are near Lake Superior.
This trail is quite secluded and it’s likely that you’ll have the place to yourself. The best time to visit is after a rain when you’ll get to see all the magnificent waterfalls at work.
While the loop is a short journey, it ends with a 100-foot climb so make sure to bring plenty of water and good hiking boots. Bug spray is also recommended depending on the time of year you visit.
Whether you’re interested in seeing some waterfalls, mining history, or just looking for a place to embrace the quiet solitude of nature, you’ll fall in love with Union Mine Trail.
