Whether or not you’re a lifelong Michigander, you’ve likely heard of our beloved Mackinac Island. While this water-surrounded wonderland is certainly worth exploring, its mainland counterpart offers charms all its own. When you’re looking for a truly unique day trip destination here in the Great Lakes State, keep Mackinaw City on your list of possibilities.
Located at the northernmost point of the Lower Peninsula, Mackinaw City houses a population of approximately 800 residents. Despite its tiny size, the town is bursting with attractions.
If you’ve ever crossed into the Upper Peninsula, you’ve undoubtedly made your way through Mackinaw City. After all, it marks the site where the iconic Mackinac Bridge stretches across breathtaking straits.
While many travelers might view the village as nothing more than a quick spot to stop for gas before heading north, we’re inclined to disagree. Mackinaw City itself is ideal for a full-fledged family adventure.
Whether you’re a fan of history, nature, food, or something in between, you’ll find much to love here. Many guests opt to step back in time by exploring Fort Michilimackinac, an 18th-century treasure.
Snap photos and read informational markers at Old Mackinac Point Light, which has guarded the shore since 1892. Of course, you’ll also want to admire the glassy-topped Straits of Mackinac themselves.
Step inside the Mackinaw Bridge Museum, stroll through a collection of charming shops and boutiques, or stock up on iconic fudge without venturing all the way to Mackinac Island at Fort Fudge Shop.
If its history and picturesque shopping district weren’t enough, Mackinaw City is also home to the Headlands International Dark Sky Park, a preserve that’s dedicated to offering undisturbed stargazing sessions.
Before heading home or proceeding to the U.P., grab a hot dog at the iconic Wienerlicious restaurant. By the time you’re through, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for this marvelous Michigan village.
