Fall has arrived in the Great Lakes State, and the change of seasons brings with it plenty of unique thoughts and ideas among Michiganders of all ages. While we each celebrate the arrival of the season in our own way, there are a few thoughts that seem relatively universal among residents of our beautiful state. Here are nine of our favorites:
1. "Isn’t it supposed to be fall, not summer?"
Sometimes fall just can't be convinced to show up, no matter how much we long for that crisp weather, and this year is a prime example. In fact, there’s a good chance you’ve had your air conditioning on at least once over the course of the past few weeks. With temperatures in the 70s and 80s, sometimes fall in Michigan feels more like summer.
2. "Isn’t it supposed to be fall, not winter?"
On the flip side of that coin, we Michiganders have also experienced early winters that seem to erase fall entirely. Heavy snow on Halloween? We’ve been there, and we know that the only solution is to add a few extra layers under that costume during trick-or-treating. Michigan weather is notoriously unpredictable, and the fall season is no exception.
3. "I can’t wait to be disappointed by the Lions again this week!"
If you’ve been a Detroit Lions fan for more than a few months, you know our beloved yet sometimes ill-fated team has a habit of letting us down from time to time. Throughout the years, we’ve repeatedly asserted our belief that "this is the year" we'll reach the Super Bowl — only to be thoroughly disappointed by our boys in blue. Regardless, we won’t stop cheering for our team.
4. "Did everyone I know go apple picking this weekend?"
You know the drill: you log onto Facebook after a beautiful fall weekend, only to be bombarded with seemingly endless posts about your friends’ adventures at various apple orchards. Plaid shirts, cute family photos among the trees, and a few apple puns… the list continues. It often feels as thought there was some kind of statewide apple-picking convention that you just weren’t informed about. Oh, well. There’s always next weekend!
5. "It’s never too late for one more trip up north."
We Michiganders don’t care if we can’t dip our toes in the water without a bit of frostbite: it takes a lot for us to give up on our wonderful Up North adventures. Whether you’re spending a chilly fall weekend at the family cottage or relaxing at a charming bed and breakfast, there’s something magical about venturing northward during autumn.
6. "Isn’t it a little cold for that guy to be wearing shorts?"
We all know that one guy: no matter how cold it gets outside, he seems unwilling to give up on his habit of wearing shorts. As fall rolls into the Great Lakes State and temperatures drop, it’s not tough to locate a few Michiganders who just can’t make the transition from summer gear to more cold weather-appropriate attire.
7. "Isn’t it a little too early for Christmas music?"
Christmas music in October?! It happens, and it can’t be stopped. While many believe that holiday tunes should be reserved for after Thanksgiving, there are a few diehard fans in the Great Lakes State (and elsewhere, we presume) who start blasting "Jingle Bells" at the first hint of chilly weather. Don’t even get us started on people who leave their house decorations up year-round!
8. "Go Blue!" or "Go Green!"
This year’s game has already been played, and the "Go Green"s have it… but every fall, Michiganders from across the state choose sides before gearing up to watch the Michigan State Spartans take on the Michigan Wolverines. It’s our state’s fiercest rivalry, and while we claim it’s all in good fun, don’t be surprised to see a few brokenhearted fans of the losing team moping around following each autumn’s showdown.
9. "I won’t let a little chilly weather keep me from having a beach day."
Our Great Lakes are our greatest pride and joy here in Michigan, so don’t even think about telling us we shouldn’t appreciate them past the end of summer! No, maybe we won’t be jumping into the waves in our bathing suits, but there’s still plenty to love about the beach when the weather turns chilly. Whether we’re strolling the shoreline with loved ones or catching an autumn sunset over Lake Michigan, our beaches are brilliant all year long.
