If you’re a movie buff in the Great Lakes State, you’re surely familiar with two of Michigan’s most celebrated cinemas: the State Theatre and Bijou by the Bay. While you might not be able to head out and enjoy flicks in person during these unique times, you can still appreciate an awesome selection of films from the comfort and safety of your own home. Get ready for an awesome streaming experience.
The State Theatre is located at 233 E Front St in Traverse City, while the Bijou by the Bay sits at 181 E Grandview Ave, less than a mile across town.
Under the guidance of filmmaker and Michigan native Michael Moore, the historic State Theatre was refurbished and reopened in 2007 as a place to celebrate cinema.
Bijou by the Bay seats 150 and sits in a former museum. The theatre opened its doors in 2013 and, like its partner the State, serves as a venue for the Traverse City Film Festival.
During typical times, Michiganders flock to these theatres for screenings, movie-themed events, classic date nights, and so much more. Both spots offer a sense of magic.
In the wake of statewide shutdowns, both locales have had to get creative. Today, patrons can take advantage of “at-home cinema” experiences via streaming services.
That’s right: as detailed on the State and Bijou’s website, you can now stream exclusive movie titles from both theatres from the comfort and safety of your own home.
These aren’t your typical streaming options: you’ll find indie films, documentaries, and critical favorites. Streaming costs range from “pay-what-you-can” to $12.
Not clear on how it all works? Never fear: the theatres have set up a detailed guide for those who might be new to streaming. Check it out here and get ready for movie night!
