When it comes to hiking, you might prefer to remain on flat ground – but we believe there’s plenty of fun to be had when a bit of extra climbing is thrown into the mix. Michigan’s many trails provide an assortment of outdoor options for the whole family, but one destination here in the Great Lakes State literally rises above the rest with its magical staircase, scenic views, and peaceful atmosphere.
Mt. Pisgah can be accessed near 2238 3rd Ave in Holland.
This unique destination, which sits just a stone’s throw from both Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan, remains open year-round and offers visitors an unforgettable experience.
Mt. Pisgah itself is a sand dune, one of many that comprise the shoreline of West Michigan. This spot is special, though: a seemingly endless staircase provides unique dune access.
Upon parking and lacing up your hiking boots, you’ll see a sprawling stairway that seems to extend upward for miles. In actuality, its highest point is just 175 feet above the lake.
As you make the trek up the wooden stairs, you might just feel like you’re climbing a stairway to nowhere. What awaits you, though, are breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
No matter when you stop by, the wooded beauty of the area is impossible not to love. From fall foliage to spring greenery, the dune is enveloped by some of Michigan’s prettiest sights.
During the winter months, the largely bare trees give way to more expansive views at the top of the staircase hike. Gaze out upon Lake Mac and Lake Michigan in all their glory.
No matter how many times you’ve made this 235-step journey, you’ll always be enchanted. It’s easy to see why Mt. Pisgah remains a favorite among locals and out-of-towners alike.
