Michigan is overflowing with countless little communities and towns that offer no shortage of charm. From Saugatuck to St. Ignace, there’s a spot in the Great Lakes State to delight each and every Michigander. But as far as designated cities go, there’s only one that takes the title of “Michigan’s smallest incorporated city,” and you’ll undoubtedly want to visit this little slice of paradise.
Lake Angelus is a tiny city tucked away within beautiful Oakland County. This quaint community houses a population of just under 300 residents, making it the smallest incorporated city in Michigan.
At the center of the city sits — you guessed it — Lake Angelus. This lovely body of water was originally called Three Mile Lake during the community’s founding in the early 20th century.
Lake Angelus was designated as a village for a large portion of its early years, but it gained the title of city in 1984. Today, it’s a beautiful yet tiny area.
All in all, the city encompasses under two square miles of land — but don’t let its size fool you. There’s no shortage of charm to be found in Lake Angelus.
The town proudly participates in the "Little Free Library" movement, so keep your eyes peeled for tiny library boxes in front of residents’ home. Take a book and leave a book for no charge whatsoever — it’s a bookworm’s dream!
If you stop in for a visit, you’ll find that the community itself is largely residential. But the scenery alone makes a journey through town well worth it. No trip to the area is complete without a stop to admire gorgeous Lake Angelus itself, which brings the community together around its stunning freshwater shorelines.
The city borders Auburn Hills, so take a quick jaunt to do some shopping at Great Lakes Crossing Mall. You’ll also find plenty of restaurants, outdoor areas, and museums to explore in the area surrounding Lake Angelus. This city is a delightful oasis within a vibrant region of our beloved state.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or a newcomer just passing through to admire the scenery, one thing is for sure: you’ll be completely charmed by Michigan’s smallest city.
Have you ever visited lovely Lake Angelus? Does it live up to its self-proclaimed status as the
