You don’t have to be a full-blown art expert to appreciate a unique and meaningful artistic experience. After all, there’s something special about exploring public art pieces, whether you’re gazing at a mural or enjoying an impressive statue. One wonderful sculpture trail in Michigan provides visitors with the chance to stroll, ponder, and bask in the beauty of truly spectacular manmade creations.
The Mason County Sculpture Trail consists of impressive sculptures situated throughout the communities of Ludington and Fountain -- both of which are, unsurprisingly, located in beautiful Mason County.
Because of its varied locations, the Sculpture Trail is actually separated into several distinct walking sections, so you’ll want to make a day trip out of it. There’s no better way to stretch your legs.
Kick off your journey at Waterfront Park in Ludington, which offers frontage along Pere Marquette Lake, connected to Lake Michigan by the Pere Marquette River. The park is scenic and family-oriented.
As you explore the park, which features picnic space and a playground, you’ll find an assortment of sculptures that detail local history. The lumber industry and baseball are two present themes.
Continue your walk throughout downtown Ludington. From a piece featuring children playing under an umbrella at Rotary Park to a whimsical creation near the Ludington Library, there’s so much to see.
There’s a sculpture in the tiny village of Fountain at Heritage Park that shows two horses with a load of lumber, while nearby Stearns Park is home to a military-themed piece in honor of brave veterans.
Keep your eyes peeled for future sculptures, as new pieces are in the works. One particularly exciting design is planned for the town of Scottville -- and promises to pay tribute to its ever-popular Clown Band.
Whether you’re checking out a small sliver of the trail or taking time to walk by each and every piece, you’ll quickly fall in love with the Mason County Sculpture Trail. Just don’t forget to bring along your camera.
