Oh, Michigan — you sure are a unique place to live. For those of us lucky enough to reside in the Great Lakes State, life is undoubtedly an adventure. While each and every Michigander is different, there are a few phrases that make the majority of our state’s residents perk up. Here are nine of our favorites.
1. "The Lions won!"
Unfortunately, we hear this all-too-rarely. Michiganders know that being a Lions fan comes with a hearty dose of disappointment and anger, but that doesn’t stop us from cheering them on — even when they narrowly lose on Thanksgiving Day. But the football-induced pain is almost worth it when we get to celebrate a victory.
2. "We’re going up north."
Who doesn’t love a good trip up north? Venturing northward has different meanings for different folks. But whether you’ve got a family cottage in Crystal Lake or a favorite campground in the Upper Peninsula, one thing is for sure: there’s nothing better than heading up north for a quick getaway.
3. "You’re right. It’s called pop."
We Michiganders stand by our commitment to calling it "pop," and we’re always thrilled when someone agrees with us. Of course, those who insist that our beloved fizzy beverages are called "soda" are typically not quick to change their minds — but that won’t stop us from trying!
4. "Ohio State lost."
Whether you’re a Michigan or a Michigan State fan, one thing is for sure: Ohio State is the absolute worst. We Michiganders hold a deep disdain for all things OSU, and nothing fills us with more glee than the realization that our ultimate rivals have lost on the football field.
5. "Snow day!"
Here in Michigan, heavy snowfall is just part of life each winter. We’ve grown accustomed to venturing outside during blizzard-like conditions and being forced to brave the cold as we shovel our cars out of the driveway. But while it’s rare, we DO get to celebrate the occasional snow day — and it’s tough to imagine anything more wonderful.
6. "We’re having pasties for dinner."
You don’t have to live in the Upper Peninsula to enjoy a good pasty. Trolls and Yoopers alike are fans of this tasty meat and potato-stuffed pastry, and with good reason: they’re ridiculously delicious! If you’re a true-blue Michigander, you’re thrilled to find that pasties are on the menu.
7. "Your stomach hurts? Don’t worry, we have Vernors."
For residents of other states, this phrase might not make sense… but here in Michigan, it’s like discovering that a magic healing elixir is in full supply. When stomach ailments strike, Vernors is our go-to, and we can always breathe a sigh of relief when we realize that our fridges are fully stocked with this fizzy drink.
8. "The water is warm enough for swimming!"
While many of us have been known to hit the beaches even when the water is frigid, there’s nothing more exciting than realizing that it’s finally warm enough to fully immerse yourself without freezing. Our Great Lakes are our greatest pride, and we eagerly await the arrival of warmer weather each year!
9. "Pure Michigan…"
You know the scene: you’re minding your own business, driving in your car or watching TV, when the tones of a Pure Michigan commercial pop up on your screen or radio. There’s just something about those flowery descriptions and the soothing voice of Tim Allen that make us ridiculously proud to be from Michigan. We’ll always stop to listen when these fantastic ads pop up.
