It’s said that the best things in life are free, but how often do we actually practice that mantra in our daily lives? Next time you’re finding yourself in need for adventure, remember that age-old saying and find out all the fun ways to explore Michigan, without opening your wallet. Whether you’re the athletic type, a shutterbug or just want to get the kids out of the house for the afternoon, here are a few spots to check out across the great state of Michigan.
There's just so much to do on this island. Michigan residents can access Belle Isle and any other state park for free if they pay a small fee when they renew their vehicle registration. In addition to taking advantage of all the recreational space, visitors can also check out the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and Anna Scripps Witcomb Conservatory, featuring a massive dome that houses a virtual rain forest setting.
For 19 days, 3-square miles of Grand Rapids are transformed into an open art space, with artists from across the globe showcasing their work all over downtown.
9) Michigan State University Farm
Known as a premiere agricultural university, MSU naturally is home to prime farmland. Take a self-guided tour on weekdays, where plenty of cows, horses, chicken and sheep are all on view. Perfect for animal lovers.
Admission is free here, so make sure to check out one of the museum's highlights, "The Streets of Old Detroit," where visitors can see Detroit just as it was.
OK, so not technically free, there is a small fee to bring your bicycle on-board the ferry, but that's where the cost ends. Ride the 8.3-mile loop, where you'll bike through downtown, passed the famous Arch Rock, British Landing and the historic Grand Hotel.
4) The Heidelberg Project
When Detroit artist Tyree Guyton re-imagined his east side neighborhood more than two decades ago using discarded items, he didn't know he would be creating a global movement, enjoyed by visitors from all over the world.
One of Michigan's most popular lake shore parks, climbing the dunes here are great for both a workout and snapping photos of gorgeous Lake Michigan. Note, there is a small fee for parking, but the views are still priceless.
