It’s nearly 2018, and you know what that means: it’s time to come up with a resolution or two! While there are some resolutions that seem universal, we Michiganders have a few traits and habits that make our New Year’s promises stand out from the rest. Here are nine unique New Year’s resolutions that you just might hear among your fellow Michiganders this year.
1. "I want to get better at euchre."
Sure, people from other states play euchre, but we Michiganders take our obsession with this card game to an entirely new level. If you aren’t skilled at euchre, you’ve probably felt left out during family gatherings and other fun events, so 2018 is the perfect time to brush up on your abilities!
2. "I will limit myself to just one paczki this year."
You know the drill: when Paczki Day rolls around, you tell yourself you’ll only have one or two of these sweet treats. Somehow, though, you end up eating six delicious pastries from your favorite Hamtramck bakery. In 2018, your ability to limit that paczki consumption will truly be put to the test.
3. "I’ll control my road rage while driving over potholes."
We Michiganders are no stranger to potholes. Unfortunately, our state is notorious for its large number of less-than-perfect roads, and this makes for quite a few surprise bumps during long car trips. This year, resolve to keep your cool when potholes seem to emerge out of nowhere, impossible as it might seem.
4. "I want to see more of the Upper Peninsula."
Many Michiganders in the Lower Peninsula have explored their home regions, but the Upper Peninsula remains a mystical locale that feels like an entirely different state. This year, why not head north and experience the splendor of the U.P. for yourself? There’s no better way to fall more in love with Michigan.
5. "I’ll try to be SLIGHTLY less disgusted by Ohio."
We know, we know: it’s hard to imagine not immediately gagging upon seeing someone in an Ohio State sweatshirt, but if you’re resolving to be kinder in the new year, starting with Ohioans might be the way to go. Instead of growling at strangers wearing red Buckeye gear, perhaps you can simply start to pity them!
6. "I’ll swear less when the Lions lose at the last minute."
There’s nothing more frustrating than watching the Lions come so close to a win, only to complete blow it near the end of the game. Christmas Eve, anyone? Many people resolve to have a gentler spirit each new year, so containing that Lions-induced anger is a perfect way to practice this newfound peacefulness.
7. "I’ll go for more walks along the lakeshore."
For a fun twist on the standard "I want to exercise more" resolution, why not throw in a Michigan element? We’re lucky to live close to the gorgeous Great Lakes, and these shorelines make for wonderful walking locales. Whether you’re strolling along the pier or jogging in the sand, you’ll have an added incentive to get outside and get moving.
8. "Maybe I should cut back on my Faygo consumption."
We all know that pop isn’t terribly healthy, but it’s just so delicious! When it comes to Faygo, many Michiganders keep sipping because the brand’s nostalgic taste is impossible to resist. This year, though, perhaps your Redpop consumption can be reduced for the sake of lessened sugar intake.
9. "I’ll take more staycations in Michigan with my loved ones."
If there’s one New Year’s resolution every Michigander should make, it’s to spend more time appreciating the beauty of our state. After all, we’re lucky to live in a spot that’s overflowing with natural beauty and manmade excitement. In 2018, let’s resolve to opt for Michigan when it comes to family getaways.
Okay, Michiganders: we want to hear directly from you! Are any of your 2018 resolutions specifically targeted toward the Great Lakes State? Share your thoughts in the comment section below, and have a wonderful new year!
