It’s no secret that Michigan is overflowing with natural beauty and outdoor splendor. Residents and visitors alike laud the Great Lakes State as an incredible place to unwind, unplug, and bask in the fresh air. While many of our destinations are famous for one particular element, there’s a national forest in our midst that offers a little something of everything. As you plan your next family outings, keep this spot in mind.
Hiawatha National Forest sits smack dab in the middle of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
This is anything but an ordinary park or wooded area. In fact, that national forest comprises a whopping 894,836 acres and seems to extend forever, offering visitors the ultimate outdoor experience.
When you choose to explore the forest, you’ve got so much to choose from. From hiking trails to campsites to relaxed locations along the beach, the list of Hiawatha highlights feels endless.
The national forest offers frontage along three of the five Great Lakes: Huron, Michigan, and Superior. From sand dunes to shoreline campsites, there are so many ways to appreciate the water.
One such option is Lake Michigan Campground, a straightforward spot near Moran where you’ll find access to rolling dunelands, the shores of our Big Lake, and comfortable camping arrangements.
Venture further north to check out White Fish Bay on Lake Superior. This area is home to the fascinating Point Iroquois Lighthouse, a 19th-century gem that will surely delight history buffs.
If you’d prefer to spend your time in Hiawatha National Forest hiking, you’re in luck. With easy options like the Naomikong Point Blue Trail, you don’t have to be in Olympian shape to enjoy the scenery.
Whether you’re gazing at rocky cliffs on Grand Island, snowshoeing along the North Country Scenic Trail, or simply passing through, this massive national forest will make you fall in love with Michigan.
