Those of us who call Michigan home are well aware of our state’s beauty and splendor, but there’s something wonderful about seeing the Mitten State receive accolades on a broader basis. A recent piece from the Smithsonian Magazine profiles the 15 best small towns to check out in 2021, and our very own Charlevoix snagged a spot. We’re inclined to agree – and we can’t wait for our next visit.
With a population of just under 2,500 residents, Charlevoix certainly qualifies as a small community. Throughout the years, though, this gem has become a beloved Michigan destination.
There’s so much to appreciate in this waterfront town, which sits peacefully along the shores of both Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix, an inland wonder. This is “Up North” at its finest.
While lifelong Michiganders know why Charlevoix is so spectacular, out-of-state readers were treated to a small taste of Charlevoix’s charms in Laura Kiniry’s recent profile for Smithsonian Magazine.
Among the highlights mentioned were the town’s ever-popular “mushroom houses,” designed by Earl Young. These Lord of the Rings-style structures can be toured from a distance or even rented.
Of course, nature is at the heart of Northern Michigan’s allure, and Charlevoix has its fair share. Venture to Fisherman’s Island State Park for a day of camping or sunning along the pristine shore.
Foodies will be impressed by eateries like Harbor View Cafe, Stafford’s Weathervane, and the Villager Pub. Make it a more classic Michigan meal by stopping in to dine at Hotdoggers Coney Cafe.
Do a bit of shopping downtown or snap some photos near the South Pier Light. The Charlevoix Historical Society is a fantastic option for history buffs who want to learn more about the area.
Whether you’re a long-time Michigander searching for a spot to unwind or a tourist who wants to explore the Great Lakes State in all its glory, a trip to Charlevoix will add some magic to your next journey.
