Every year it’s the same old waiting game. Waiting for warmer weather. Waiting to kiss winter goodbye. And of course, waiting for the days when we can dig into a scrumptious scoop of Michigan-made ice cream. It’s only a short matter of time before the many ice cream parlors, soft serve stands and frozen custard shacks open for the season, and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
Last year we brought you a list of 12 spots worth checking out. The roundup included places like Sherman’s Dairy Bar in South Haven, the MSU Dairy Store in East Lansing, and Moomers in Traverse City. Like the dedicated readers you are, we heard all kinds of other recommendations. Don’t worry, we listened and have revised our latest list to reflect that.
This seasonal shop just announced its opening, March 14. Now fans can dig into its more than 60 flavors that come from Plainwell Ice Cream Co. and Ashby's Sterling Ice Cream.
Looking for a tasty treat, with a twist? You'll want to check out this little shop in Ann Arbor that's set in a timber house. It serves unique gourmet scoops like salty caramel & fresh basil.
Here you'll find Sherman's Ice Cream, which has been making the stuff for the past 100 years...they must be doing something right to have that kind of longevity.
Straight from the farm, you'll find some two dozen flavors like black cherry, cowpuccino, and seasonal egg nog. And when you're done enjoying a cone, be sure to check out everything else this Oakland County farm has to offer.
During the spring and summer months this tiny spot (along with plenty of others like it on Woodward Avenue) opens to offer simply delicious soft serve frozen custard.
This family owned shop has made more than 300 unique flavors like real buttered pecan, Choc Choc Chip, toasted coconut, malted Whopper, and local raspberry sorbet.
This gem has been around since 1937 and can be spotted all over the UP and parts of Wisconsin. Its fans can't get enough of its signature Mackinac Island fudge flavors.
This cute little shop at Eastern Market boasts Michigan-made Hudsonville ice cream and Saunders toppings. Plus, it's right next to Supino Pizzeria. Pizza and ice cream, quite possible the perfect match.
All made in-house, the ice cream here is only part of the fun as you're on an old fashioned farm as well.
