Editor’s note: Memorial Falls at Twin Waterfalls Nature Sanctuary is closed to the public for renovations until at least 2022.
Waterfalls are one of nature’s most fascinating features. If you’re anything like us, you’ve likely searched “waterfalls near me in Michigan” on several occasions. Michigan is lucky to house many gorgeous falls, each of which offers a unique and exciting experience for visitors. But there’s one waterfall in the Upper Peninsula that allows for a truly interactive visit. Put on your hiking boots and get ready to walk behind the water at Memorial Falls.
Memorial Falls are two small but beautiful waterfalls located in Alger County, close to the town of Munising. These falls are lesser-known than some of their more forceful counterparts in the area.
The falls flow over gorges, with the larger falls dropping approximately 40 feet. The smaller falls are sometimes dry due to weather conditions, but can usually be observed until early summer each year. For the best view of the falls, visit after a heavy rainfall or in the spring when snow has melted.
For access to the falls, drive eastbound on H-58 until you reach Nestor Street. Take a right and follow the sign reading "MNA Memorial Falls." You’ll find a parking area nearby.
The hike to the falls is short and sweet, with lovely scenery to lead the way. You’ll cross a wooden bridge near the creek just above the falls — stop here to snap a few photos before following the train downstream to the base of the falls.
Near the end of the trail, venture up and observe the "window" in the gorge that houses the falls. This break in the rock can be climbed through or simply used as a spot to rest and view the waterfalls. The real fun begins when you explore the falls up-close and personal. Venture behind the falls for a unique view and take some stunning photographs. Use caution while exploring — the rock might be slippery.
For adventurers of all ages, and in all seasons, Memorial Falls is a special opportunity to experience Michigan’s natural beauty firsthand. Your trip to these spectacular falls will not soon be forgotten.
