Imagine this: you’re walking along a trail of soft sand in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Located just eight miles west of Grand Marais, the Log Slide scenic overlook can be accessed from H-58 in the Upper Peninsula. The road to the overlook’s parking area is clearly marked for visitors.
Upon parking, the scenic area can be accessed with a short and sweet walk through the dune-lands surrounding the overlook. Two trails are available, including one that is handicap accessible.
Visitors can follow the guided trail and even elect to call a free mobile "self-guided tour" number, which will offer details about the area during the walk.
At the end of the trail, the real magic begins. Log Slide scenic overlook offers a truly magnificent view of the Grand Sable Banks and Dunes to the east and Au Sable Point to the west. Lake Superior sprawls out grandly at the bottom of the lookout, 500 feet below.
Log Slide has a unique history: it was named for its original use as an actual log chute, on which lumberjacks would transport logs to boats below. The slide itself is gone, but it’s easy to imagine the strenuous work that once took place at the overlook.
Those who are feeling brave can run down the side of the dune, but be forewarned — while the trip down takes only a few minutes, the climb back to the top can take upwards of an hour. 300 of the dune’s 500 feet are comprised of vertical land, and visitors with certain medical conditions or general poor health are advised to avoid this climb.
Whether or not you elect to climb the Log Slide slope, you’ll certainly be awestruck by the beauty of the surrounding area. The view at this scenic overlook is one of a kind — and undoubtedly ranks as one of Michigan’s most incredible outdoor destinations.
