Most Michiganders are familiar with Belle Isle, Beaver Island, and Mackinac Island. But did you know that there’s another charming island located smack dab in the middle of the Detroit River? Here’s a look at one of our state’s best-kept secrets, and you’ll certainly want to visit.
Grosse Ile sits in the Detroit River and is considered part of Metro Detroit.
The island comprises nearly 10 square miles of space and is the largest one of its kind in the river.
This is no ordinary island — it’s actually Michigan’s second-most populated island, with a population of over 10,000 residents.
The township in which the island sits also houses a series of smaller, uninhabited islands that surround the “Big Island.”
The island can be reached by accessing one of two bridges: the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge and the Wayne County Bridge, also known as the “Free Bridge.”
You’ll find plenty of activities to keep you occupied during your visit to Grosse Ile. A walk along the coastline to view the Detroit River is a perfect place to start.
For a completely unique experience, stop by Gibraltar Bay Alpaca Farm to catch a glimpse of these lovable animals up-close.
Check out one of Grosse Ile’s golf courses to enjoy a day on the green.
The island is even home to its very own airport: General Aviation Municipal.
For a leisurely afternoon, simply take a drive around the island to appreciate its beautiful waterfront homes, lighthouses, and charming neighborhoods.
Hungry? Stop in at Lloyd’s Bar & Grill for a pint of beer and a delicious meal before you leave Grosse Ile.
Whether it’s your first visit or your 50th, you’ll certainly be charmed by Grosse Ile’s combination of nature, attractions, and history.
