If you love exploring the great outdoors, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has so much to offer. In fact, some Lower Peninsula residents don’t even fully appreciate the beauty of this portion of our state, which provides access to everything from sprawling shorelines to resplendent waterfalls. When you’re looking for a fun way to explore, there’s one U.P. trail that belongs on your bucket list.
The Iron Ore Heritage Trail winds its way through the Marquette Iron Range.
No matter how you choose to utilize this awesome pathway, you’ll fall in love with its scenic vibe. The trail extends for a whopping 47 miles through natural beauty.
As its name suggests, the Iron Ore Trail offers access to some of the historic railroad corridors that once played a role in Michigan’s iron ore and lumber industries.
In fact, while there’s lots of natural beauty to appreciate here, the trail is sometimes referred to as an “outdoor museum” due to its unique location along an industrial route.
There are nine trailheads throughout, so you can conveniently split the trail into portions that work for you. Endpoints are situated at the Marquette Welcome Center and near Republic.
Whether you choose to walk, jog, bike, skate, or horseback ride, you’ll appreciate the area’s many delights. From Lake Superior views to forest foliage, there’s plenty to love.
During winter months, you can even appreciate the trail via cross-country ski or snowmobile in designated areas. Talk about a versatile way to enjoy Michigan.
When you’re ready to experience the Upper Peninsula in a new way, head to the Marquette area for a mix of history and natural splendor on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
