The Largest And Most Inclusive Playground In Michigan Is Incredible

I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. It can be difficult to find a playground that’s fun for kids and inclusive for those with different abilities. The City of Rochester Hills in Michigan recognizes that challenge. They recently built the Innovation Hills playground to provide a park that all children can enjoy. It’s not only one of the most inclusive playgrounds in the state, but it’s also one of the newest and largest.
Rochester Hills is located less than 30 miles from Detroit, making it an easy drive for anyone in the Metro Detroit area. The playground itself features several ADA-compliant aspects that are clear the moment you get out of the car.
Those who use a wheelchair will be glad to know that they have a wheelchair-accessible parking lot and entrance.
I can tell how much thought and work went into making this an inclusive place for kids to play just by looking at the entrance. You won't find many places with stairs or rough terrain. The playground also specifically features earth tones to prevent overstimulation for children diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
All this stimulation can be overwhelming for some kids. Phase two of the project came with several “cozy cocoons”. These allow children to escape for as long as they need if they’re feeling overstimulated.
Wheelchairs are just as mobile as everyone else in most areas of this playground and park. Right next to the play area, families can enjoy a stroll on numerous paved trails just like this one that are just as good for anyone on wheels as they are for folks using their legs.
It’s also rare to find a place that isn’t only inclusive but provides close encounters with nature. People frequently see deer, turtles, and other wildlife on the nature path. Those with limited mobility can get a personal nature experience without having to worry about being held back.
The mile-long paved trail and boardwalk allow children of all abilities to explore this 110-acre park. This part of the design was intended to allow all children a unique nature experience, that some might not be able to find anywhere else if they have limited mobility.
One of the most fascinating parts of this project is that it’s not even finished yet. Phase three is expected to come with an “Indiana Jones-style” rope bridge that connects the playground with a 40-acre greenspace. No matter your child’s ability level, make sure they’re bundled up and ready to hit the outdoors with some great gear from The North Face.
