Life in Michigan is pretty darn close to perfect, but it isn’t completely void of difficulties. After all, our state is undoubtedly unique – and this uniqueness comes with its fair share of struggles. While we’re exceptionally proud of the Great Lakes Stand and all it has to offer, we can’t help but acknowledge these nine imperfections that accompany life here in Michigan.
1. Potholes
As much as we adore long road trips across the state, we’d be remiss not to mention the ever-present potholes that insist on popping up along our routes. No matter how many times we drive Michigan’s streets, we always seem to uncover new bumps along the way. Literally.
2. The occasional Ohioan
There’s one thing all Michiganders can agree on: Ohio is the worst. Unfortunately, our proximity to the Buckeye State means that we’re occasionally forced to interact a rogue Ohioan. While our rivalry is largely in jest, there’s nothing worse than seeing an Ohio State jersey appear among a crowd of Michiganders.
3. One word: snow
Don’t get us wrong: winter has its perks, and we certainly adore the holiday season. But the presence of freezing temperatures often puts a major damper on our travel plans, outdoor activities, and general comfort. As if that weren’t enough, snow normally goes hand-in-hand with ice, which is an entirely separate beast. Sigh.
4. Football rivalries
We love our college football, but our dedication to either Michigan or Michigan State has been known to cause rifts within families. Michiganders take their sports quite seriously, so you should be prepared for a bit of tension during family gatherings that happen to take place during college football season!
5. Construction
We know, we know: the constant road construction is supposed to help relieve us from those pesky potholes mentioned above, but there’s nothing more annoying than trying to get home from work and realizing that your standard freeway entrance ramp is suddenly closed. Construction season here in the Great Lakes State really feels neverending.
6. Public weeping during Pure Michigan ads
Nobody likes crying in public, but we just can’t help ourselves when the smooth tones of Tim Allen’s voice flow through the radio waves. Pure Michigan ads offer the perfect combination of nostalgia, flowery descriptions of beloved Michigan destinations, and emotional music. We can’t help but tear up a bit.
7. Tourist season
While we appreciate the economic benefits that come along with tourism in Michigan, we also frequently find ourselves frustrated by the crowds of visitors that take over our favorite beaches and other destinations during summer months. We love sharing the beauty of our state, but we can’t help but long for the quietude of the off-season from time to time.
8. The Detroit Lions
Being a Lions fan is a tumultuous ride. There’s no telling how our boys in blue will perform on any given Sunday, but we’ve been burned so many times that we find it tough to have much hope for our team. In fact, as much as we hate to admit it, we’re sometimes embarrassed to admit who we’re rooting for.
9. Forced defensiveness
There are plenty of unsavory rumors floating around about Michigan. From pervasive negativity about the city of Detroit to false assertions that Michigan is nothing but a "flyover state," we can’t help but enter defense mode at times. After all, we’re fiercely proud of our state - flaws and all - and we wish others would simply understand what all the hype is about.
Okay, fellow Michiganders: we’re ready to hear from you! Are there any other unfortunate elements of residing here in the Great Lakes State? We’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below!
