Every region of the world seems to have its style of pizza and the State of Michigan is no different. However, you won’t find traditional Detroit-style pizza as the go-to option in all parts of the Mitten. DiMaggio’s Pizza and Burgers in Coloma, Michigan is an example of just that, sitting at the same location on the Blue Star Highway since the DiMaggio family purchased the building in 1957.

This pizza is called the special for reasons I don’t need to explain. You’ll find their house-made Italian sausage, green peppers, and mushrooms on this pie–and notice how I didn’t call them toppings. These pizzas are finished with cheese on top so you don’t have to worry about any of those delicious additions falling off. You can also add any toppings you want, or order your pizza with a thin or thick crust.

DiMaggio’s celebrated their 60th anniversary in Michiana back in 2017. This pizza shop opened up when you could find groups of teens cruising down the streets on weekend nights. This was also when the Blue Star Highway was the main route to get to the rest of the state. However, just a few years later, the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System debuted in Michigan, making the Blue Star Highway a secondary option. DiMaggio’s is still the first option for pizza for many families who made it a tradition.
Rebuilding after the fire

A fire in 2019 put the future of DiMaggio’s into question. While the shop had to close down for several months, they were able to rebuild while also making some upgrades. Now they’re slinging out the same delicious pies in an updated, renovated dining area.

I have to admit, with the number of times I’ve had DiMaggio’s, I’ve never strayed past pizza and the anchovy salad because they’re just that good. However, if you are looking for something different, DiMaggio’s burgers are a great way to change it up. These are simple burgers, but they’re also juicy, cooked-to-order, and pretty thick.

The recipes here have clear roots to traditional American Italian cuisine, with the original owners moving here from Chicago. Not only did they bring their legendary pizza recipes, but they also serve their Italian flavors in the form of lasagna, sausage and peppers, and spaghetti and meatballs. For me, this red sauce can go on just about anything Italian, so it makes me really happy that those dishes still make it out of their kitchen on a daily basis.

I grew up with my dad telling me how DiMaggio’s is one of the few true roadhouse-style restaurants my generation will come across, and he’s not totally wrong. When the Blue Star Highway used to be the fastest road in town, folks could easily pull right off the highway after a long day of travel to get a warm and impressive meal with a cold brew to wash it down. Now, parking right off the road is still just as easy, especially because most of today’s traffic takes I-94.

DiMaggio’s has been a personal favorite for my family with the tradition going back to when my grandfather packed up my dad and his siblings into the station wagon to grab some pies back in the 1960s. It’s a slice of rectangle-cut nostalgia for me, that I always introduce my visiting friends to. Make sure to stop by DiMaggio’s next time you’re traveling on the Blue Star Highway near Coloma, Michigan.
