Every adventure starts with a single step. And then another, and another, until you find yourself somewhere new and undiscovered. That’s the journey of a writer. You never know where the next word will take you. Hopefully, together, we can experience some amazing new adventures at OnlyInYourState.
There are a number of historic restaurants in Michigan that have been open for over one hundred years, but only two have been standing since before the Civil War. The White Horse Inn has had a storied history as a town general store, a stagecoach and train stop, a brothel, and even a stop on the Underground Railroad. But now, it is a place to nourish your soul with good food, lively conversation, and memories that last a lifetime.
The Hoard House, now the White Horse Inn, was first built in 1848 as a general store in Metamora, Michigan.
Lorenzo Hoard purchased the store in 1850 and turned it into an inn and stagecoach stop. His foresight was rewarded in 1872 when the Michigan Central Railroad cruised into town, choosing Metamora as a train stop.
The Inn changed hands a few times after Lorenzo's death in 1888 until it was eventually purchased by Frank Peters in 1923, who named it the White Horse Inn.
The White Horse Inn rode its way through on its noble white steed until 2012 when it closed down after a long period of neglect. Our faithful white horse must have had a guardian angel because it was purchased by Linda Egeland and Victor Dzenowagis, who were dedicated to restoring this iconic gem.

It reopened in 2014 after an extensive restoration while preserving its unique and beautiful history.
As an homage to the stagecoach and foxhunting days of its origin, renowned painter and sculptor Jean Louis Sauvat created this tribute on the back wall of the lower dining area.
From its famous Chicken Piccata to a delightfully healthy Farmhouse Pasta with fresh vegetables, the menu is as unique as the atmosphere.
If you’ve never been, it certainly deserves a spot on your next Michigan road trip. You will fall in love with the historic charm everywhere you look, the warm welcoming atmosphere, and the simple joy of enjoying a good meal with friends and family.
