I'm proud to be from the great state of Michigan. I've lived in the Mitten several different times throughout my life spending time in all corners of it. My journeys took me up and down the Lake Michigan coast, out east to explore Detroit and Ann Arbor, and to the dense forests of the UP.
Before writing with Only In Your State, I worked as a local TV news reporter and anchor, most recently in South Bend. Many of the stories I covered took place in Southwest Michigan. My roots are even deeper in the Wolverine State as I often head to Kalamazoo to visit family.
When I'm not out exploring nature, I'm avidly watching sports. I specifically have a deep love for the Michigan Wolverines (my alma mater), and I get to write about them and several other Big Ten teams as and editor for Athlon Sports. I also love to enjoy the great outdoors with my wife and our dog, Piper.

Michigan makes the most of winter with beautiful scenery, picture-perfect snowy days, and plenty of frozen lakes to skate. But winter fun isn’t only limited to the great outdoors. A winter wonderland awaits visitors in the heart of the Motor City at the Monroe Street Midway.
The only time I hear the word Midway is when I’m at the county fair in the summer. This one in downtown Detroit isn’t that far off, with the addition of a few more snowflakes. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the ice, snow, and cold this winter, so bundle up and find out what they have to offer
This space in downtown Detroit transforms into a winter wonderland between November 9 - January 7, Thursdays through Sundays. You can bundle up and try out the ice bumper cars.
It costs $5 per person and children as young as five are allowed to drive the cars. You can even double up as long as the driver is 18 years old or older.
This is a great view of the entire layout of the Monroe Street Midway. To the left are the ice bumper cars and the fireside seating areas I just mentioned.
To the right is some of the interactive art, a tent with a bar, and the next attraction I’m about to talk about.

The Arctic Slide will likely be the first thing that pops out to any kids who enter the Midway. However, you don’t have to be a kid to ride this 20-foot tall, 80-foot long slide.
I love hockey, and a lot of Michiganders do too, so this one definitely caters to those in the Mitten. This is also a free activity with no age restrictions.
There are also a number of arcade games in one of the heated tents. Just like the county fair, you can test your luck at reaching a high score this winter.
There are a lot of multiplayer games and activities at the arcade so you can pit your skills against your friends.
The holiday lights and beautiful views from downtown make a sit by the fire one of the most relaxing ways to get away from the hustle and bustle of all the winter activities. There are also several pieces of interactive art that visitors can enjoy.
I absolutely love Detroit’s vibe, so I have no problem putting on some layers and watching the snow fall over the tallest buildings in Michigan.
This is one of the best family-friendly ways to enjoy winter in Detroit. There’s so much variety and so many unique ways to enjoy the snow, ice, and holiday spirit. The best part is there’s no cost for entry.
