If you’re looking for some spooky mischief to pursue, there’s nothing quite like heading out for a drive down one of Michigan’s most frightening haunted roads. Of course, we can neither confirm nor deny the validity of these stories, but they’re chilling enough to keep us from making the trip. If you’re brave enough, venture down some of these scary streets in the Great Lakes State — just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
1. Morrow Road (Algonac)
Legend has it that a woman lost her child on Morrow Road during the 1800s, and she can still be seen searching today. Many visitors report seeing a woman in a white blood-stained dress wandering along the side of the roadway. This is one road that you should venture down at your own risk.
2. Robson Road (Belleville)
This spooky street in Belleville has been the site of several odd happenings. One account states that drivers can exit their vehicles, stand outside the car, and wait for mysterious lights to appear. While these lights seem to be from an oncoming car, the car ultimately "passes through" without leaving a trace.
3. Saint Aubin Street (Detroit)
This famous road in Detroit was home to an absolutely chilling murder. In 1929, religious cult leader Benny Evangelist and his family were found murdered in their home on Saint Aubin. Benny’s body was propped up at his desk with his severed head set neatly at his feet.
4. North Adams Road (Addison)
The story goes that a young girl was hit and killed by a passing car as she waited for her school bus on N. Adams Road. Since her death, many strange happenings have been reported, from the unexplained sound of door-knocks on nearby homes and bizarre cold spots with no natural cause.
5. Hell’s Bridge (Algoma Township)
This bridge sits near a desolate dirt road that receives little traffic — and for good reason. Legend has it that a man named Elias Friske murdered a group of children in the woods around this area during the 19th century. Today, visitors to the bridge can hear the sound of the devil’s laughter mixed with the cries of children. Talk about terrifying.
6. Sawyer Road (Traverse City)
Locals have reported several strange incidents after driving down Sawyer Road at night. One report includes a sighting of a calm yet frightening woman walking at the roadside in a white dress with a candle in her hands. Keep your eyes peeled and your defenses up during your next trip to Traverse City!
7. Perch River Bridge (Sidnaw)
In the 1930s, this bridge was home to a car accident that killed a young couple and their child after the rising river swept violently across the roadway. To this day, many visitors have reported seeing a 1930s-era car appear mysteriously on the bridge, only to vanish shortly after. Could this be car be a ghostly apparition of the people who lost their lives here?
8. Geddes and LeForge (Ypsilanti)
This area was the site of several murders during the late 1960s that claimed the lives of multiple college students from the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University. It’s said that a drive near these roads, which leads past the farmhouse where the murders happened, will cause your trunk to inexplicably pop open — might this be the mischievous work of a ghost?
