There are plenty of purportedly haunted places in Michigan, but few structures hold the intrigue and spookiness of a lighthouse. After all, our Great Lakes are full of history – both eerie and enchanting – and lighthouses play a major role in this maritime lore. Whether you’re a standard history buff or more of a paranormal enthusiast, there’s one supposedly haunted lighthouse in Michigan that should be explored.
Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse is located off County Highway 431 in Gulliver, Michigan.
This underrated Upper Peninsula gem sits along the shores of Lake Michigan, still active as a navigational tool for boats to this day. When you stop by to visit, you’ll immediately be struck by the light’s splendor.
The tower and accompanying quarters, established in 1892, can be visited year-round by curious tourists and history-loving Michiganders. The light’s interior and an on-site museum are open seasonally.
While it’s decidedly fascinating to dive into the lighthouse’s role in guiding vessels across our beloved Big Lake over the generations, there’s a spookier side to Seul Choix: a handful of spine-tingling ghost tales.
Over the years, visitors have reported experiencing everything from creepy apparitions to disembodied voices in and around the lighthouse. It’s even said that a former light keeper can’t seem to leave the grounds.
Other reports nod to the ghost of an elderly woman (a keeper’s mother-in-law) who perished during a blizzard at Seul Choix. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, these stories are certainly intriguing.
Of course, if you’re merely here for the history, you’ll also be impressed. Take time to admire the 77-foot tower and Italianate architecture that set the lighthouse apart – and don’t forget to bring your camera.
Whether you’re on the hunt for a spirit or simply hoping to explore one of the most beautiful lighthouses in Michigan, a stop at Seul Choix won’t disappoint. There’s something here for every sort of adventurer.
