Many Michiganders will drive outside of the Great Lake State to visit the Art Institute of Chicago. But did you know that you can find incredible works of art, including pieces by famous painters, right here in our home state? Artists and art lovers will appreciate this admission free museum in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
The University of Michigan Museum of Art is located in Southeast Michigan, a 45-minute drive outside of Detroit.
When you arrive you’ll notice multiple exquisite sculptures outside the museum like the Mark di Suvero Orion sculpture. Make sure to take time to explore the grounds and university architecture before entering the museum.
With over 20,000 works of art that represent more than 150 years of history, culture, and media, it’s easy to believe that this is one of the largest university art museums in the United States. While the museum is spread across multiple floors, all of the public areas and galleries are wheelchair accessible.
Of course, you can’t take any of the artwork home with you, but you can buy a unique gift at the University of Michigan Museum of Art Shop. You’ll find an eclectic mix of fine-art related goods that will make for a perfect travel souvenir.
When you’re finished shopping and admiring the impressive artwork, head over to the museum cafe which offers salads, sandwiches, bento boxes, pastries, coffee, and espresso. This is a perfect place for family and friends to gather and chat about the awe-inspiring artwork they’ve seen throughout the museum.
