Many places in Michigan become scintillating winter wonderlands when the snow falls, the lakes freeze, and twinkling lights adorn the houses, trees, and shops. It’s also a state with so many charming small towns that it’s hard to pick which one is the most festive winter getaway in Michigan. The little town of Holly already has a wintery name and is perhaps the most enchanting winter town in the state.
Holly is a quaint and beautiful village of about 6,000 people about an hour north of Detroit and it is gorgeous any time of year. When winter comes, it turns into an old-fashioned holiday haven that brings people from all over Michigan to celebrate the holidays.
The whole village becomes adorned with festive holiday decorations and lights and a special feeling comes over the place as people visit crafty shops and enjoy delicious meals and holiday treats.
There are so many beautiful parks with tree-lined trails that are perfect for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. You may even catch a glimpse of some Michigan wildlife.
Holly’s biggest draw during the winter is the Holly Dickens Festival which is the event locals eagerly anticipate every year. It’s been running longer than any other Dickens-themed festival in the nation and it kicks off every year with a charming parade.
People dress up in their best Dickensian garb to sing Christmas carols and enjoy the vast array of entertainment like choir performances, Irish dancing, whimsical juggling shows, and simply stroll about looking and feeling wonderful. During the last weekend of the festival an interactive performance of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is performed and it’s the highlight of the festival.
If people get tired of walking around, there’s nothing better than taking an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage ride and hearing the clopping of hooves and the whickering of the horses, taking in the sights and sounds of a beautiful village that has transformed into the embodiment of Christmas cheer.
