If you love Christmas, get excited: despite our unseasonably warm weather as of late, snow is in the forecast and the holidays will be upon us in a heartbeat. Many Michiganders are crazy for Christmas — so here are a few surefire ways to prepare for the holiday season in the Great Lakes State.
1. Lace up your ice skates and hit the rink.
There are few things more classically Christmas than ice skating, and Michigan offers plenty of rinks where you can do just that. One charming favorite can be found at Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids.
2. Take a drive to the frozen lake.
When it gets cold enough, there’s nothing quite as magical as taking a drive out to your nearest Great Lake to marvel at its frozen beauty. Make a new holiday tradition out of visiting the icy tundras of our state.
3. Make your annual visit to Bronner’s.
No Michigan Christmas is complete without a visit to Bronner’s, a massive shop in Frankenmuth where you’ll find everything from holiday lights to nativities. You could spend hours here and never see it all.
4. Get your thrill on with a sledding excursion.
Sledding is the perfect way to make the most of our state’s cold weather and have a little fun at the same time. Timberlee Hills in Traverse City is an amazing place to grab a snow tube and make your way down the slopes.
5. Go holiday shopping at Eastern Market.
This charming market in Detroit is an incredible spot to shop all year round, but there’s something especially magical about visiting around Christmastime. Pick up a few holiday cooking ingredients and maybe even a gift or two.
6. Embark on a Christmas tree hunt.
There’s no question that a Christmas tree is often the focal point of your home’s
holiday decor, and Michigan is home to plenty of amazing tree farms. Bundle up and head out to select the perfect tree at a spot like Candy Cane Christmas Tree Farm in Oxford.
7. Appreciate the sounds of the season with a holiday concert.
What could be more festive than the sound of a choir singing age-old Christmas tunes? Whether you’re attending your child’s holiday concert or listening to a professional choir perform, it’s not Christmas until you hear the melody of "Silver Bells."
8. Bake (and eat!) Christmas cookies.
No matter where you’re from, Christmas cookies are the quickest way to get into the holiday spirit. Michiganders know that the holidays have arrived at the first whiff of sugar cookies baking in the oven.
9. Head out into your neighborhood for some Christmas caroling.
Michigan is home to some of the friendliest people in the country, and what better way to spread holiday cheer than to go Christmas caroling? Whether you’re in South Haven, Marquette, Port Huron, or somewhere in between, head out and do some singing this year.
10. Visit with jolly ol’ Saint Nick.
You’re never too old to visit with Santa Claus, and he’s been known to make quite a few stops in the Mitten State! Be sure to tell him what you really want for Christmas — hint: it involves the words "Detroit Lions" and "Super Bowl."
11. Enjoy a whimsical night at the ballet.
There’s something positively breathtaking about seeing a live ballet, and we’re lucky to live in a state that values this gorgeous art form. This year, you can catch a performance of The Nutcracker by the Ann Arbor Ballet Theatre from December 16th-18th.
