11 Vintage Photos Of Detroit’s Streets That Will Take You Back In Time

Have you ever longed for the ability to step back through history? While time travel technology might not exist, we’re lucky to have access to plenty of historical photographs and other artifacts that offer insight into what life in the Motor City was like during eras past. If you’re searching for a virtual journey back in time, check out these 11 impressive vintage photos from the streets of Detroit.
1. Detroit has always been a hub for activity, including family outings and everyday gatherings. This photo from Grand Circus Park shows Detroiters strolling along Woodward Avenue in 1910.
2. It might be difficult to recognize, but this capture from all the way back in 1902 highlights the hustle and bustle of Detroit’s iconic Cadillac Square - including streetcars in the foreground.
3. While the precise date can’t be pinpointed, this photo from approximately 1915 shows plenty of cars parked along the street near the Detroit Athletic Club. Check out that beautiful architecture!
4. Do you have memories of attending concerts at the Detroit Orchestra Hall, situated at the corner of Woodward Avenue and Parsons Street? This image shows the building as it appeared back in 1970.
5. For some of us, 1999 might not feel like “vintage,” as it’s hard to accept that the 90s were more than 20 years ago. This golden hour scene captures downtown Detroit just before the turn of the century.
6. Before its demolition in 2005, the Statler Hotel (pictured here in the mid-1910s alongside the Whitney Building) featured 18 stunning floors. The once-thriving hotel was situated at 1539 Washington Boulevard.
7. There’s something fascinating about checking out a simple, everyday scene from our city’s past. This photo was snapped along Monroe in 1989 - did you live in Detroit during those days?
8. This vintage scene from 1921 shows Detroit’s Blackstone Theater, which was offering screenings of the film “Madame X.” While it’s now long-defunct, the theatre sat at 116 Michigan Avenue.
9. Woodward has always been a prime spot for activity in Detroit, so it’s no surprise that we’ve included multiple photos along the iconic avenue - including this colorized scene from 1942.
10. Long before the People Mover made its first appearance, Detroiters relied on trams like this one to make their way through the city. This Motor City scene was photographed back in 1953.
11. While it might not be a street, the Detroit River is certainly one of our city’s most iconic and historically relevant passages. This photo shows the river in use by a triple-decker boat in 1901.
