Detroit has unfairly received a bad rap, but native Detroiters aren’t going to let out-of-towners ruin their pride and love for this city. In fact, there are a bunch of things that only Detroiters can brag about having and it should make any other city feel a little envious.
1. Detroit is synonymous to music.
Motown and Techno were born here. Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Iggy Pop, Stevie Wonder, Madonna, The White Stripes, Eminem, Aaliyah, Ted Nugent and Bob Seger were all born here. Should we go on?
2. There's literally a city within a city.
The Renaissance Center is a cluster of seven skyscrapers that are located right on the Detroit waterfront. You could literally live in the Renaissance Center since there are a number of businesses, shops, restaurants, a post office, a tailor, gym, pharmacy and a movie theater.
3. We are Hockeytown.
There is no doubt that Detroit is and always will be known as Hockeytown. Yes, the Red Wings haven't won a Stanley Cup since '08, but there is no question that we have the best fans and will soon have one of the best stadiums in the country for our team.
4. We're only a 5-10 minute car ride to another country.
If you have friends under 21, head to Canada since it's legal to drink at 19. Canada also has Cuban Rum and Cuban cigars that are banned in the U.S. Don't forget to check out the casino, too.
5. The best farmers market in all the U.S. is right here.
Eastern Market was founded in 1891 and is a six-block public market that welcomes thousands of people each week who are looking for fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, seafood and meat. There is also a lot of history behind the area: it is where Ulysses S. Grant was headquartered and it was part of the Underground Railroad.
6. We have the best Middle Eastern food on the planet.
Okay, so we have the second largest Middle Eastern population in the world outside of the Middle East, but we are lucky enough to get their delicious food whenever we want.
7. We have a park that's bigger than Central Park and is on its own island between two countries.
Belle Isle is an island park on the Detroit River, situated between the U.S. and Canada. The park is 982-acres and home to a nature zoo, conservatory, golf practice facility, maritime museum, and an aquarium.
8. We have some of the world's most historic art.
The Detroit Institute of Arts contains 100+ galleries, making it one of the largest art collections in all of the United States. It is also regarded as one of the top six museums in the U.S. because of its vast collection of art from all over the globe.
9. Our architecture is stunning.
These images don't do justice when trying to explain the beauty that surrounds the city. Go and check out the Guardian Building yourself, we promise you'll be blown away by the architecture. Don't forget to sip coffee in their atrium to really get a good view.
10. We have the best pride in our city.
From t-shirts, bumper stickers, posters and hats, everywhere you look there is tons of Detroit paraphernalia. We love our city, our sports teams and the people that make this city great.
