We Detroiters have our own habits that no one will truly understand. They might seem weird to out-of-towners, but we aren’t ashamed of what we do! From throwing octopus at hockey games to drinking Vernor’s to cure our colds, these are eight undying habits we Detroiters have that we will always defend.
1. Drinking Vernor's when we're sick
Vernor's Ginger Ale is used by a number of people to cure stomachaches, hangovers, and even the common cold. We don't care how crazy this sounds; it isn't stopping Detroiters from drinking it to cure just about anything.
2. Being a die-hard Lions fan, even though we aren't the best NFL team.
No matter how good or bad the Detroit Lions are doing, we will support them until we die and we will continue to paint our faces blue to show how much we love our home team.
3. Buying American cars.
A lot of us have family members that work at Ford, so it makes sense to support, buy, and drive a Ford automobile.
4. Throwing octopus onto the ice during hockey playoffs.
The Red Wings unofficial mascot is Al, the purple octopus. During playoff time, you might want to watch your head as you'll likely see an octopus or two flying through the air and landing on the ice.
5. Giving people who put ketchup on their coney dog the death stare.
Why would anyone smear ketchup on an already delicious Coney dog topped with chili, mustard, and onions? We will definitely be staring at you and we will definitely be judging you from afar.
6. Playing euchre instead of any other card game.
Only in the Midwest, will you see people playing a game of euchre. If you don't know how to play or have no idea what it is, we feel sorry for you.
7. We're prepared for any kind of weather that comes our way.
We Detroiters know how quickly our weather changes. One minute it'll be nice and sunny out, and the next, it'll start snowing. But we're not worried; we are always prepared for whatever weather change comes our way.
8. Rolling our eyes when we have to tell out-of-towners we do not all live on 8-mile like Eminem.
This might be one of the most common questions a Detroiter will hear from outsiders. No, we don't all know Eminem, and no we do not all live on or near 8-mile; however, we do like the rapper and we're proud so say he's from the Motor City.
