1. Rooting for the Lions, no matter what.
After so many years of football-induced disappointment, you might think we’d have learned by now that rooting for the Lions simply brings pain and suffering. Here in Detroit, though, being a dedicated Lions fan is built into our blood— and we couldn’t stop wearing those blue jerseys if we tried.
2. Calling it "pop."
Sure, we’ve faced ridicule from out-of-area friends who seem insistent upon referring to our favorite beverages as "soda," but will that stop us from ordering "pop" everywhere we go? Absolutely not! We’ve been calling it by its proper name since birth, and we don’t intend to change our vernacular anytime soon.
3. Heading straight for Vernors when illness strikes.
Most people reach for the medicine in the pink bottle when nausea makes an appearance, but Detroiters are a different story. At the first sign of sickness, we automatically uncap the nearest bottle of Vernors and pour ourselves a bubbly glass of this classic ginger ale. Nothing heals our ailments faster!
4. Correcting people during "Don’t Stop Believin'."
Everyone knows this line: "Born and raised in South Detroit!" Well, we hate to break it to the world, but "South Detroit" isn’t an actual region of the city. Whenever we hear our friends or family belting out this line, we find it difficult not to butt in and educate them about the Motor City’s geography.
5. Loudly singing along to Motown music.
There’s just something in our blood that keeps us connected to Motown music at all times. No matter where we are, Detroiters simply can’t stop ourselves from bursting into song and dance when a Stevie Wonder or Diana Ross favorite pops up on the radio. We’re so proud to call these artists our own!
6. Rolling our eyes at cold-weather complainers.
Really, non-Detroiter? You’re complaining about a few inches of snow and temperatures in the mid-30s? You wouldn’t last a day in the Motor City during winter months! Here in Detroit, we’re well-accustomed to some of the most frigid conditions imaginable, and we can’t help but laugh when others think their wintery weather compares to ours.
7. Eating multiple coney dogs at once.
Is it even possible to just eat one coney dog? Probably not for a Detroiter. As soon as we chow down on one of these delicious dogs, we can’t help but reach for another… and another. Sure, it’s not our healthiest habit, but it’s part of life in the Motor City. We can’t help that our food is so delicious!
8. Throwing octopi onto the ice before every Red Wings game.
This might be the oddest habit of all time, but we stand by it. If you’ve never attended a Red Wings game, this might sound crazy, but we Detroiters have been known to toss a real octopus onto the ice before each game. We’re not sure why, but it always brings us good luck.
9. Putting clothes on our statues
We just can’t help ourselves from adding a little something extra to our city’s favorite landmarks. The Spirit of Detroit just looks so much more fashionable when he’s decked out in a Tigers jersey or a Lions t-shirt! It might garner a few odd looks from non-Detroiters, but we stand by this tradition.
