If the beach is calling your name, Lexington makes for an ideal summer escape. During the warmer months, visitors flock to the shorelines in this town, which can be accessed via car from Detroit in just one hour and 20 minutes. Upon arriving, head straight to Lexington State Harbor for waterfront fun before exploring the town’s charming shopping district.
For nature enthusiasts, Dexter is a must-visit in all seasons. When summer rolls around, though, there’s an extra dash of magic throughout this picturesque community, which houses an assortment of outdoor activities for all skill levels. Head out for a picnic or a stroll at Dexter-Huron Metropark, go canoeing at Hudson Mills, or embrace a bit of history at the Dexter Area Museum. Talk about a blast!
Situated just 30 minutes by car from the Motor City, Plymouth is an oft-overlooked spot that boasts plenty of excitement and attractions during the summertime. Check out a Music In the Air concert at Kellogg Park, take the kids out for playtime at Plymouth Township Park, or enjoy a few drinks at Stella’s Black Dog Tavern. You’ll be feeling like a local in no time at all.
We’re big believers in the appeals of Frankenmuth all year long, and summer is certainly no exception. This Bavarian-inspired wonderland is well worth the trek from Detroit, offering visitors the chance to shop, dine, and bask in a unique architectural atmosphere. Whether you’re enjoying a summer music event or embracing year-round Christmas at Bronner’s, you’ll adore this town.
Who would have thought that one of Metro Detroit’s most beloved music and event venues would make its home in a tiny village? Live entertainment enthusiasts have likely ventured to DTE Energy Music Theatre (formerly known as Pine Knob) for concerts from some of music’s most iconic names including Bob Dylan, Green Day, and Diana Ross. Not a concert fan? No worries - you can unwind at Clarkston’s small but charming Deer Lake Beach before heading back to the Motor City.
With a full-time population of under 600 residents, Metamora certainly qualifies as a tiny community. Its size shouldn’t stop you from visiting, though - there’s plenty to enjoy here, particularly during the summer months. Outdoor fans will have a blast visiting the gorgeous Seven Ponds Nature Center in neighboring Dryden, while music lovers can head to Harmer Park for the Summer Music in the Park series. Golf your worries away at Metamora Golf & Country Club before calling it a day and venturing home to Detroit.
Located just under one hour by car from Detroit, Chelsea is a must-visit destination for wholesome summer fun. Kids will love the chance to spend their time off school at fun attractions like the Chelsea TreeHouse, an indoor playscape that feels like something out of a fairytale. Outdoor fun is available at Timber Town or Pierce Park. Older visitors will enjoy Chelsea’s Purple Rose Theatre or Historical Museum.
