If you find yourself longing for some of the more mundane elements of everyday life in the Motor City these days, you’re certainly not alone. During these unprecedented times, many of us are missing the normalcy of springtime in Detroit. The good news, though, is that difficult times simply cannot last forever – and we’ll eventually return to some of the activities and events that we so acutely miss now. Here are nine things that no Detroiter will ever take for granted again.
1. Our restaurants
It’s no secret that Detroit residents love going out to eat, and it’s easy to understand why. After all, the Motor City is home to plenty of dining destinations that are pure heaven for foodies. From authentic eats in Mexicantown to the delights of American and Lafayette Coney Island, the food options here are incredible. We can’t wait for the opportunity to gather with loved ones at our favorite eatery.
2. Sporting events
Sports are a huge element of life in Detroit, whether you’re a Tigers fan, a Lions faithful, a Pistons supporter, a Red Wings season ticket holder, or something in between. While we can’t gather in large crowds during these tough times, we can only imagine the incredible energy that will exist when major Detroit sporting events are once again available for public attendance.
3. Perusing Eastern Market
There’s something so special about Eastern Market, with its seemingly endless array of vendors, shops, and smiling faces. Whether you drop by each week to pick up fresh produce or only visit from time to time, you know that this massive marketplace is key to Detroit’s tight-knit vibe. When the market reopens its doors to bustling crowds, we surely won’t take it for granted.
4. Live music
Detroiters love to watch live music, with concerts typically happening at venues like the Fox Theater, the Masonic Temple, and Ford Field. After all, Motown is at the very heart of our city, so music has long played a role in keeping Motor City residents smiling. That first post-coronavirus concert in Detroit promises to be a celebratory affair for all involved.
5. Nights on the town
Whether you frequent the casinos or prefer to spend your evenings sipping craft beer at local bars, you’re likely craving the social excitement that comes along with hitting the town. Nightclubs, pubs, and gambling establishments are now closed to the public, but we can’t wait to get back out and celebrate once safety restrictions allow us to do so.
6. Crowded days along the Detroit River
If you’ve ever walked alongside the river on a packed summer afternoon or mingled with pals during a bike ride down the Dequindre Cut, you know that Detroit’s outdoor attractions are just as beloved as its indoor ones. In future months and years, we’ll surely be more appreciative of the chance to get some fresh air without stressing about maintaining a safe distance from those around us.
7. Visiting the DIA
Many Detroiters have only visited the DIA once or twice, but there’s so much to discover in this brilliant museum. You don’t have to be an art expert to find a fascinating exhibit here, and we’re looking forward to fully embracing this and other local institutions in the future. Detroit is a true haven for artists, so why not plan to stop by and do some exploring when you’re finally able?
8. Our health
This applies to people across the world, not just Detroiters: in the future, we’ll surely be extra grateful for our good health and the extensions of our physical wellness. Whether we’re walking through Campus Martius Park, getting some sunshine on Belle Isle, or simply taking a bike ride through our own neighborhood, it’s impossible to imagine a scenario in which we don’t place greater value on our health going forward.
9. Each other
Life in Detroit has its ups and downs, and these struggles can lead to rifts between neighbors, family members, friends, and other community members. When a sense of normalcy returns, many of us will be overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of gathering with the people we love and spending quality time together. After all, our fellow Detroiters and those we love from afar are truly irreplaceable.
