If there’s one thing all Detroiters have in common, it’s the fact that we hold strong opinions. After all, growing up in the Motor City instills us with a sense of strength and pride that’s simply unmatched by other major cities, and this leads to some stubbornness on our parts from time to time. While we might not agree on everything, here are nine things that people from Detroit are perpetually stubborn about.

No matter how many other cities we visit, Detroit always reigns supreme for us when it comes to cuisine. After all, we adore the diversity of our hometown’s restaurant scene, which features everything from authentic Mexican eats to up-and-coming foodie havens. If that weren’t enough, we’ve got some amazing classics like coney dogs and Detroit-style pizza. We won’t budge on calling our food the best.

Our stubbornness about sports might sometimes be misguided or lead to self-inflicted pain, particularly when it comes to our unwavering love for the Lions, but this won’t stop us from showing up for the teams we love. From the Pistons to the Tigers to the Red Wings, there’s a sports team in the Motor City for every preference to appreciate, and we hold our traditions close to our hearts.

We don’t care if you think that fizzy fountain drink should be referred to as "soda." You can argue with us all day about the origins of this bubbly beverage, but you’ll never get us to call it anything other than "pop." It’s simply a fact, and we think non-Detroiters should accept it as such.

They don’t call us the Motor City for nothing. Detroiters are fiercely proud of the city’s role in the automotive industry, and this is often reflected in the vehicles you’ll spot driving around town. On any given day in Detroit, you’ll surely spot plenty of cars manufactured by the famous Big Three automakers. Our city has made some incredible contributions to the transportation world, and it’s difficult to convince us to get behind the wheels of imported cars.

Call us risk-takers, but we’ve grown accustomed to dealing with below-zero temperatures and seemingly endless piles of snow throughout the years. When it comes to wintertime conditions, we’re decidedly stubborn, often refusing to cancel our plans or stay inside unless it’s absolutely necessary. After all, we Detroiters have thick skins, and this concept can be applied more literally during the chilly months.

Nothing irks a Detroiter more than meeting someone who claims to be from the Motor City, only to reveal that they’re from Farmington Hills. While we have plenty of love for our friends from Metro Detroit, we can be a bit stubborn about allowing them to claim that they’re from Detroit proper. We’re glad you appreciate our city, pals, but suburban life is different from life within the city limits.

We’re the home of Motown, and this has instilled us with a sense of stubbornness and deep pride about the music our city has produced over the years. Sure, Nashville has made plenty of fantastic country tunes and we can appreciate Portland grunge, but nothing beats the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, The Temptations, or Marvin Gaye.

Detroiters know how to have a good time. Throughout the year, we might be found at a holiday-themed gathering in Campus Martius Park, enjoying a festival along the riverfront, listening to live music at a jazz club, hitting up a casino in Greektown, or attending a special event at one of the city’s many museums. We might even celebrate a bit too much from time to time, but that’s only because we’ve earned the right to have a blast in the wake of many collective hardships.

If there’s one thing people from Detroit are stubborn about, it’s our love for the city itself. We’re fiercely proud to call the Motor City home and we can’t help but let this pride show when anyone challenges us on the greatness of Detroit. We might move across the states, visit other parts of the country, or experience new regions of the world, but you’ll never convince us that anything compares to Detroit.
